Painted Circus

Authors’ Booking Service is pleased to announce that children’s author and illustrator Wallace Edwards is now scheduling visits to Ontario schools for the coming school year.

His rate is $275 per session plus GST, plus travel. In some instances, accommodation costs may also apply.

Wallace Edwards’ books have received numerous national and international awards. His first book Alphabeasts (2002) received the Governor General’s Award for children’s book illustration; and he is a Governor General’s Award nominee in 2007 for his most recent book The Painted Circus. His bibliography and a complete listing of his awards is provided below, along with details concerning the types of presentations he offers.

Here’s what a Teacher/Librarian had to say about this author after a recent school visit:

"I wanted to let you know that you have been the talk of the class, the school yard, and the dinner tables of [our] students over the past few days! The [students] really enjoyed meeting you and seeing the creative process in action!”

Wallace Edwards is a member of The Writers' Union of Canada, and so schools wishing to invite him may be eligible for a travel and fee subsidy to off-set the cost of his visit. Contact us for details of this program.

Time slots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please respond early if you are interested in booking.

Wallace’s Presentation Details

Generally speaking I do a slide show of the book Alphabeasts, show some original work, and talk about the process of making a book. I may also show slides of works from my other books; for example, Monkey Business, Mixed Beasts, The Extinct Files and/or The Painted Circus.

Slide shows are often followed by a question-and-answer period about book-making or other topics related to the content of the particular book. For example, if showing Monkey Business slides, we may discuss idioms; for The Extinct Files we may discuss the children’s own science projects. My most recent book, The Painted Circus, concerns optical illusions. For this book I plan to demonstrate some optical illusions and discuss how they work.

These activities are usually augmented by a drawing demonstration during which I encourage the participation of the children in suggesting drawing content (e.g. combination animals as is found in my book Mixed Beasts). On occasion I have give-aways available.

I will present to grades JK to Grade 6 as my books are best-suited to these age groups.

Ideally the maximum number of students per session would be approximately 20, but I can accommodate 40–50 students per session if necessary.

I will do presentations to larger groups if the equipment (i.e. microphone, slide projector  & screen) is available.

I sometimes offer workshops for grades 3 to 5.

The maximum number of participants per workshop is 20 students.

I am comfortable in the following venues: classrooms, libraries, auditoriums, gymnasiums, community centres… but this is flexible.

Equipment requirements for presentations include: Slide projector and screen, easel, flip chart, magic markers, microphone for larger groups/larger settings (e.g. auditoriums, gymnasiums)

Equipment requirements for workshops include: Slide projector and screen, easel, flip chart, magic markers; and for the students, paper and drawing materials.
