Valerie’s Presentation Details

How to Build Your Own Country (pictured above in cake version) is a civics lesson in disguise. I have developed a program in which children collectively create an imaginary country by choosing a name for their country, a flag, an anthem and a currency. After establishing an identity for their country, children talk about forms of government and how decisions get made in real-life countries.

Or, if people wish, I can describe the stages of book-making, using How to Build Your own Country as a model. Children see how this book started with a silly idea (according to the editor who came up with it) and emerged through the writing and illustration process.

Throughout, the emphasis is on having fun while working together. Does it work? According to one boy in a Burnaby classroom: “I really had fun with your book How to Build Your Own Country. It’s the best stuff I did in school. It was so fun that I think it’s almost as fun as gym.”
