Griggs

2011 Red Maple fiction nominee

Service is pleased to announce that writer Terry
Griggs is now scheduling visits to Ontario
schools.
Her rate is $250 for one session of 45-60 minutes,
$500 for two, plus travel from Stratford.
Terry
Griggs is the
author of several novels for children, including Nieve and the Cat’s
Eye Corner trilogy. For adults, she has
published
short stories in numerous literary magazines and anthologies, such as The
Journey Prize and Best Canadian Stories,
as well as
three novels. Her fiction has been nominated for the Governor
General’s Award and the Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, and in 2003
she won the Marian Engel Award for a distinguished body of work. Terry
has read at venues across the country and has served on the
faculty of the Banff Writing Studio and as writer-in-residence at the
University of Western Ontario in London and the University of
Windsor. Originally from Manitoulin Island, Terry currently lives in
Stratford, Ontario.
Terry
Griggs is a member of The Writers' Union of Canada, and so schools
wishing to invite her may be eligible for a travel and fee subsidy to
offset a portion of her visit cost. Contact us for more details.

Presentation
Details
Combined
with short, lively readings of her work, Terry will discuss subjects
such as the sources of story, the development of fantasy characters,
unusual narrative elements and subtext,
the
value and pleasures of reading, word choice and the inherent
magic of language, and her personal experience of the writing
life. At the end of the session, she will answer student’s
questions and, if suitable to the situation, will offer books for
sale, plus some freebies, likely bookmarks and posters.
Grades
for presentation: 4-8
Maximum
number of
students per session: 60
A
classroom or
library are preferable. An auditorium is not out of the question if
it’s set up with a microphone, although no gymnasiums svp.
Equipment
and
other requirements
A table and a glass of water. A
lectern, if not too formal for the occasion.
The
presence of a teacher or librarian.
