Authors’
Booking Service is pleased to announce that author Sarah
Yi-Mei Tsiang is now scheduling
visits in the Greater Toronto Area.
Sarah would be
delighted to visit to your school or library. Her rate is $250
for a single session, $425 for two sessions, $550 for
three
sessions and $700 for a full day, or four sessions, plus kilometrage
from
Kingston.
Sarah’s
picture book, A
Flock of Shoes,
has been recognized both nationally and internationally. CM Magazine
praised A
Flock of Shoes,
saying
“… Tsiang’s simple yet evocative language will engage young
listeners … Leng’s depiction of Abby’s world … is magical.”
Here’s
what one parent in Kingston Ontario had to say about Sarah’s
presentations:
“Will
in grade 5 loved her story telling and insists that we buy the books
to send to my baby nephew in England. Erin (grade 6) was enthralled
with all Sarah said about writing childrens stories and recounted it
all to me this morning. She is inspired to begin her first children's
book now! I am thrilled that they both had the chance to be
inspired!”
Sarah is a member of The
Writers' Union of Canada, and so schools wishing to invite her may be
eligible for a travel and fee subsidy to off-set the cost of her
visit. For details of this program, please contact us.

Details
Grades JK – 3: (approximately 40 minutes) We get our wiggles out and then I read the book, talking to the kids along the way about their own experiences. We do a question period, and talk about the process of writing and publishing a book. We explore the key elements of fiction and what makes a good story. Depending on the age group we then move on to either a craft (JK/SK) related to the books or we write a story together.
Grades 4, 5 and 6: (approximately 50 minutes) We talk together about the writing process and where we find our ideas. I talk about process of revision, and finding magic in the work of writing. We read a picture book, and a poem from Sweet Devilry and talk about writing for different age groups. Lastly we have a free question period where the kids can ask me anything at all.
Grades 7 and 8: (approximately 50 minutes) We talk about the writing process, and about the fundamentals of poetry. We talk about writing fiction, and how to structure a story. The session ends with a reading and open question period.
Grades
9-12:
(approximately 50 minutes) I can offer either a lecture on fiction or
poetry, complete with take-home writing exercises. We discuss writing
as a career, and how to find supports and mentors within their own
communities. We also discuss the practical aspects of writing for a
living. There is an open question period.
For me, school and library visits are one of the best parts of being an author. The students I meet are a constant source of inspiration. I aim, in turn, to inspire and amuse.
I will present to:
Grades JK - 12.
I will happily present to any number of students. I have presented to as few as 2 and as many as 250.
I will present in a classroom, library, gym or under a tree.
I also offer:

A table. That’s it!
