James Bow

Authors’
Booking Service is pleased to announce that first-time young adult
author, James Bow, is now
scheduling visits to Ontario schools.
His
rate is $175 per session, $300 per half day, $600 for a full day
(maximum 4 sessions), plus travel from Waterloo.
Here is what Bobbie Henley, Department Head of Library at Brantford
Collegiate & Vocational School had to say about a recent
presentation:
"It was pretty darn
good. They really enjoyed his talk and asked lots of questions."
James is particularly suited to doing writing workshops and
presentations with avid writers, grades 7 and up. As someone who was
published at a young age himself, he can give many tips and insights.
James
is a member of The Writers' Union of Canada, and so schools wishing to
invite him may be eligible for an expense and fee subsidy to offset the
cost of his visit. For details of this program, please contact us.

JAMES BOW'S
PRESENTATION DETAILS:
I have two presentations that I can give
to your students, depending on your preference.
1.
A Writer's Journey
How do you begin a life of writing? What challenges will you face along
the way? How do you get published? I'll talk with students about the
difficulties of sitting down to write, and how to overcome them. I'll
speak about my life as a writing teenager, and how that led to my first
published novel twenty years later. I'll speak about the value of
persistence, of how all authors have had to overcome rejection. I'll
speak about the importance of committing yourself to a career that you
love. I'll read small selections from my novels and answer questions.
This presentation is appropriate for a general audience of students in
grades 5 through 8. A more mature presentation is available for
students in higher grades.
2.
The Waters Beneath Us (Recommended for Toronto Schools)
Did you know that you are standing on or near a buried river? As
Toronto grew from village to town to city, the creeks and streams that
ran through the neighbourhoods were often covered over, turned into
storm sewers, and forgotten. But they're still there, and can show up
in surprising ways. I'll read small selections from my historical
fantasy novel, "The Young City" and answer questions.
This presentation is appropriate for students interested in history or
urban studies, grades 5 through 8. The presentation will be tailored to
highlight to buried or forgotten river near your school. A more mature
presentation is available for students in higher grades.
Maximum number of students per session: 100 (more can be accommodated
depending on venue, just ask).
WRITING
WORKSHOPS
I host workshops for students, grades 6 and up, engaging them in
writing exercises in small groups, tailored to their age group. The
maximum number I can accommodate is 25.
PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
Blogging in the classroom: what is a blog, how do you set it up, and
how can it help you connect with your students and their parents? In my
hour long presentation, I'll walk you through the technology and its
applications.
For all presentations, I am most comfortable in a classroom, library or
gymnasium. I have no special equipment requirements.
