Praise for Harry’s Presentations

“Harry Endrulat, author of A Bear in War, came to Erin Centre Middle School in Peel for two days during the last academic year to do a reading and writing workshop with our grade 6 classes. The staff and students were captivated by his engaging manner and with his story about how the book came to be. He conducted a full-day workshop with selected classes and led them through the publishing process from start to finish. Using the framework of the Max and Ruby books, each student created their own Max and Ruby story, which we subsequently printed for the students to keep. Harry returned later to do follow-up activities with the students. I would highly recommend Harry Endrulat as a visiting author. His rapport with the students and staff was exemplary and inspiring!”

Kerry Marsh, Teacher-Librarian, Erin Centre Middle School

“It has been such a pleasure working with you and everyone at Seneca Hill has been so impressed!”

Donna Smith, Teacher-Librarian, Seneca Hill Public School

"Harry’s touching presentation on A Bear in War brought the book alive for the students. His detailed information on the writing of the story gave students wonderful insight into an author’s job and the process of writing a book.”

Katherine Shaw, Teacher-Librarian, Edenwood Middle School

“It was great to have you here and we all enjoyed and learned from your presentation!"

Elizabeth Walters, Teacher-Librarian, Sunnybrook School

Harry Endrulat’s Presentation Details

Harry’s presentations are very interactive, which makes them more interesting and rewarding for the audience (and the author). Harry offers three different presentations:

Presentation I: The Reluctant Reader

Age Range: Kindergarten to Grade 8

Number of Students: Small classes to entire schools

Program: 45 minutes to 1 hour

A reluctant reader in his youth, Harry avoided reading and writing at all costs. In fact, it wasn’t until he was in his teens that one book turned his life around—and he suddenly became passionate about literature. In this intriguing presentation, Harry provides real-life examples of his past to help children get hooked on reading and writing. He also delves into the writing process and the importance of discovering one’s own family history. After reading A Bear in War, Harry shows the students original artwork used in the book, archival photos of the family, images taken from the Canadian War Museum (including those of Teddy in his glass case), and authentic World War I memorabilia. A question-and-answer session follows. After this presentation, as an added bonus, Harry offers a reading from one of his Max & Ruby titles (he has written 26 books based on the show on Treehouse TV) and a complimentary Max & Ruby colouring sheet specifically for the school’s kindergarten classes.

Presentation II: A Bear in War—Remembrance Day Presentation

Age Range: Kindergarten to Grade 8

Number of Students: Small classes to entire schools

Program: 45 minutes to 1 hour

For A Bear in War, Harry starts the presentation with a discussion about World War I, the impact that the conflict had on the Rogers family, and the significance of Remembrance Day. After reading the book to the children, Harry shows the students original artwork used in the book, archival photos of the family, images taken from the Canadian War Museum (including those of Teddy in his glass case), and authentic World War I memorabilia. Harry also delves into the writing process and the difficulties he encountered bringing this amazing story into print. A question-and-answer session follows if there is time.

Presentation III: Max & Ruby Series

Grade Range: Kindergarten to Grade 4 (some flexibility here)

Number of Students: 30 students (some flexibility here)

Program: 45 minutes to 1 hour

Created specifically with younger students in mind, Harry runs a Max & Ruby writing workshop. Children work collaboratively with the author to create their own Max & Ruby story, while learning the basics of the writing and editing process. Students receive a poster publicizing the author’s visit and a Max & Ruby colouring sheet. After the workshop, Harry takes the students’ text and places it in designed pages with existing Max & Ruby illustrations. The end result is an original Max & Ruby story that the kids can share with family, friends, and the rest of the school. This presentation can also be geared toward writing fractured fairy tales.

Presentation IV: Writing Workshop

Age Range: Grades 5 to 8 (some flexibility here)

Number of Students: 30 students (some flexibility here)

Program: 45 minutes to 1 hour; extended workshop 2 to 3 hours

This interactive workshop is tailored specifically for slightly older students and meets curriculum requirements. Harry provides a thorough overview of the writing process, including such topics as generating ideas, the “hook,” the main components of a story (introduction, crisis, climax, dénouement), plot, setting, character development, voice, editing, and more! For longer sessions, the students generate their own ideas for stories (based on family artifacts, a special toy, or a stuffed animal), create in-depth character descriptions, and map out detailed plot outlines. The children then proceed to write their own stories, using the process steps they learned earlier in the workshop. Handouts help the students organize their stories, while Harry provides direction and support.

Other Presentations for Adults

Harry Endrulat is also available for keynote addresses and professional development days for teachers and librarians. During a session, Harry takes the audience through the creative writing process (generating ideas, the “hook,” research, character development, etc.). He also discusses the publishing industry (having worked as an in-house and freelance editor for many years) and the difficulties in getting one’s book into print. If requested, Harry is willing to create presentations that address the unique interests of the audience.
