David Skuy

Authors’ Booking Service is pleased to announce that author David Skuy is now scheduling visits in the Greater Toronto Area and surroundings.

David would be delighted to visit to your school or library. His rate is $250 per session, or $450 for a full morning. He has a vehicle.

David’s book,
Undergrounders, has been nominated for a Silver Birch award in 2012. The fourth volume, Overtime, in his best-selling Game Time: Charlie Joyce Hockey Series, was published by Scholastic Canada in September.

His books are Young Adult fiction, written for kids aged 9 – 14. With a strong male protagonist, and the hockey theme, they appeal to boys, even the reluctant reader, along with the more sports- minded girls.

When he’s not writing, David is a business lawyer, and a former university lecturer. He has been providing writing workshops to school-aged children (preferably grades 5 – 12) for many years.

Presentation Details

He offers two presentations. The first is oriented towards a classic presentation, and therefore is most effective for shorter presentations (30 – 45 minutes). The second is a writing workshop, and can range from 1 to 2 hours.

  1. History of the Novel

This is an inspirational call to reading. Both interactive and entertaining, the story of how novels came into existence provides the platform from which students are encouraged to discuss why books are important, and what they give to the reader. The technological distractions of the modern age are also discussed.

  1. How To Write A Story

The fundamental principle of writing fiction is explained: how to develop a character. The theme of the workshop is simple - the character writes the story, not the writer. The students learn this principle by creating their own character, and then using that character to create a story outline. This workshop is very interactive, and challenges the students to be both creative and disciplined in their writing.
