Courtney's Presentation Details

My presentation offers a candid, straightforward and humorous rundown of the publication process. Teens are walked through:

- What it takes to write a book

- How to pursue publication

- How a book is prepared for publication after it's sold.

I start by talking a little bit about myself and my novels, and use them as launching points to discuss writing and revision and rejection, searching for a literary agent, what happens when you sell a novel and life after your novel hits shelves, with a Q&A period to follow. My presentation demystifies the publishing industry a little and stresses the importance of the hard work involved in becoming a published author, but--with much perseverance (and luck!)--how possible it can be.

Grades I will present to: 9 - 12 only

Audience size limits: I prefer smaller audiences; preferably 25 students, no more than 30. Given the conversational and relaxed nature of my talk, this is necessary. I want students to feel they can engage and participate at any point while I'm speaking.

Venues you will present in: Smaller venues only such as classrooms and libraries. No gyms or auditoriums.

Equipment or other requirements:

A screen and projector for my laptop and a table or desk to talk at. I request that a librarian, teacher or other school representative be present throughout the presentation.
