The latest movement in author readings
is the virtual visit. Authors, through the magic of webcams and
programs like Skype, are able to appear (via a projector on a screen)
in the classroom and interact with the students. It's a "green"
way to have an author from some other part of the province, country
(or world) visit your classroom. There are technical hurdles to
overcome, but there usually is a teacher or a tech whiz student who
enjoys tackling these problems. And, music to everyone's ears, it is
a cheaper way to hire an author since there are no travel expenses
(though sometimes they'll ask for a virtual lunch and virtual red
Smarties, just tell them they'll get a virtual cheque and they'll
stop being so cheeky).
